3 Spring Lawn Care Tips

The sun is shining and birds are chirping – spring is about to be sprung! Here in Indiana, we’re anxious to get outside and soak up the rays. But along with nicer weather, of course, comes lawn maintenance. Taking the proper steps in the springtime can ensure a beautiful, green lawn during the summer months. Here are three tips from the team at Green Works Lawn Care to get you started.

Tidy Up & Tune Up

Surely you tidied up your lawn at the end of the fall season, right? Well even if you took that step, chances are there are some new sticks, rocks, weeds, or other debris hidden in your grass that could be plucked up. A clean lawn is much easier to maintain. Having sat all winter long, your lawnmower likely needs some attention. A tool that most likely gets used at least once a week is one that you’ll be able to count on. Some things to check are the oil, air filter, spark plugs, and blades. Be sure that your blades are sharp and balanced so that your lawn receives a proper, even cut.

Aerate & Overseed

During the winter, snow can sit on your lawn and compact the soil, making it difficult for air and water to reach the roots. Aeration is the process of removing small plugs of soil to help proper nutrients penetrate your yard. While it isn’t necessary, aerating is a great way to bring your lawn to life. At the start of spring, you may notice some bare spots or dead patches of grass. Applying grass seed to your lawn can help fill those patches back in and thicken up the rest of your yard. Just be careful not to overwater as there is usually plenty of moisture in the spring. Generally speaking, you won’t want to go over an inch each week.

Prevent & Fertilize

Spring is the time to take a preemptive stance against weeds. Applying these treatments will specifically target those pesky annual weeds, putting a stop to their growth. Additionally, if any dead spots have appeared, that may be a sign of lawn disease. While there are some products out there that you can self-apply, the problem may be bigger than you can handle yourself. In that scenario, a lawn repair may be necessary. If you really want a lawn you can be proud of, consider fertilization. Fertilizing in the spring is another way to rejuvenate your yard and sprout a lush, green lawn for the summer. Just be sure to follow the directions for optimal application for your location.
