Hot Indiana summers can take a toll on even the healthiest lawns. With rising temperatures and long stretches without rain, knowing how and when to water your lawn is key to keeping it green, lush, and thriving. At Green Works Lawn Care in Carmel, IN, we’re here to share expert watering tips that help your lawn beat the heat all summer long.
One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is watering their lawn too frequently and too lightly. Shallow watering leads to weak root systems that can’t handle dry conditions. Instead, aim to water deeply—soak the soil to a depth of about 6 inches. This usually means applying about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, either from rain or irrigation, and spacing it out over two or three sessions.
The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning—ideally between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. This allows the water to soak into the soil before the sun is high and evaporation increases. Watering in the evening may seem convenient, but it leaves the grass wet overnight, creating a breeding ground for fungus and disease.
During periods of extreme heat or drought, your lawn may need more frequent watering. On cooler or cloudy days, you can cut back a bit. Pay attention to your soil as well. Sandy soils drain faster and may require shorter, more frequent watering sessions, while clay holds moisture longer and should be watered more gradually.
Some turf types, like Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue (common in Indiana), go dormant in the heat of summer. If your lawn turns brown but the grass is still firm and resists tugging, it may simply be in dormancy. A dormant lawn doesn’t require as much water but will bounce back when cooler weather returns. However, you’ll still want to provide at least ½ inch of water every two weeks to keep the crown alive.
Watering is just one part of summer lawn care. Keeping your grass at the right mowing height (about 3 inches) and fertilizing at the right times can help your lawn retain moisture and stay stronger through the heat.
