1. Don’t Use Too Much
We understand how you might reason that using more ice salt would yield better results. After all, wouldn’t more salt equal less ice? However, when it comes to salt, less is more. Overuse of the product can result in it being tracked into your home and can also harm any vegetation you may have underneath or around where the salt is being used. Be sure to read the application instructions thoroughly to determine the recommended quantities per area. If you’re worried about using too much product, try using the colored varieties now available so you can see exactly where your salt is landing and when to stop applying.
2. Apply Salt Correctly
While reading the application directions to determine quantity, you’ll also need to pay attention to the rest of the package warnings and instructions. For example, some products may be harmful to bare skin thus it’s important to wear gloves. Additionally, ice melt should not be used on roofs or brick sidewalks, so pay attention to what type of surface you’re applying it to and read warnings to avoid property damage. Finally, manufacturers recommend using a handheld fertilizer spreader instead of a scoop or shovel to ensure even application.
3. Find the Correct Type
Most ice melt products are made from the same 5 chemicals. What makes the products different is how quickly they work, and at what temperature. Pricier options generally will work faster and at lower temperatures. Generally, there is a product to suit every need so look at different manufacturers to find the right ice melt for your area.
4. Clean It Up
This may be the most important tip we can offer. Ice melt tracked into your home is both unattractive and harmful to your floors. Be sure to use mats both outside and inside your entrances to prevent salt from being tracked in. It’s also important to clean the mats often throughout the day. If the ice melt has been tracked into your home, be sure to clean it up right away to avoid further damage. Use a vacuum or a mop to clean hard floors, however, carpets may need to be cleaned professionally depending on the damage.
