How Aeration Helps Soil with Clay Concentrations

Did you know that many of the areas surrounding Indianapolis—such as Zionsville, Brownsburg, Fishers, and Noblesville—have soil with very high clay concentrations? This means that your soil may be compacted more than regular soil, which can cause problems such as a lack of water and nutrients. At Green Works Lawn Care, we solve this problem with aeration. Aeration is the process of making lots and lots of tiny holes in the ground to break up soil compaction in order to create deeper root systems. Aeration opens up space, allowing air to reach the roots. Your soil will drain better, and your grass will be able to utilize water and nutrients. Soil compaction due to soil with high clay concentrations is a common cause of struggling lawns in Indiana. You may have this type of soil if:
  • You notice water standing on your lawn for a day or two after it rains.
  • You have a layer of thatch that’s thicker than half an inch.
  • You can’t easily insert a shovel or trowel into your soil.
  • You have weak, patchy, or thin grass.
  • You have shallow rooting of trees.
  • You have completely bare areas in your lawn.
If any of these sound or look familiar, your lawn could definitely benefit from aeration. At Green Works, we highly recommend aerating every year—and some lawns are in such bad shape that they require aeration several times a year. We will be happy to give you an assessment on your lawn so that it can get back to that lush green yard you want. If you live in the Indianapolis, Carmel, Westfield, Fishers, Noblesville, Broad Ripple, Brownsburg, or Zionsville, IN, area and are suffering from the effects of soil with clay, let us at Green Works Lawn Care know. We can also help with any other lawn-related issues you may have. Simply contact us at (317) 663-0222, and we’ll be there to help! Photo credit: public domain via wikihow.com
