Aeration opens up space, allowing air to reach the roots. Your soil will drain better, and your grass will be able to utilize water and nutrients. Soil compaction due to soil with high clay concentrations is a common cause of struggling lawns in Indiana. You may have this type of soil if:
- You notice water standing on your lawn for a day or two after it rains.
- You have a layer of thatch that’s thicker than half an inch.
- You can’t easily insert a shovel or trowel into your soil.
- You have weak, patchy, or thin grass.
- You have shallow rooting of trees.
- You have completely bare areas in your lawn.
