5 Fall Maintenance Tips for Your Lawn

As summer begins to fade away, it can be tempting to put away all the tools and neglect your lawn until springtime. Many homeowners think their lawn needs less care in the fall since the grass grows more slowly. But take note! Fall is an important time to maintain your grass and get it healthy before winter. At Green Works Lawn Care, we want to offer you five things you can do now that will make a big difference come spring.

1. Take Care of Leaves

Leaves may look beautiful spread across your lawn, but they can block light and trap excess moisture. Make sure to rake or blow leaves off your turf as much as you can. Otherwise, you may have a soggy, decaying mat of grass in the springtime.

2. Feed Your Lawn

Adding fertilizer in the fall can make the difference between an “okay” lawn and a beautiful lawn. Feeding in the early fall can help grassroots recover from the hot summer temperatures. And boosting your lawn with a late fall application can nourish and protect your lawn in the winter.

3. Reseed

If you have bare spots in your lawn, fall is the opportune time for reseeding. Warm ground, cooler days, and more plentiful moisture allow for new seeds to take hold more easily. Like with any seeding project, make sure to keep the soil moist!

4. Mow Your Lawn Shorter

In late fall,  lower your mower down 1 to 2 inches more than usual. Grass that gets too long can mat up and be vulnerable to fungi in the snow. Regular mowing at the correct height is a great way to ensure a healthy lawn.

5. Loosen the Soil

Aeration prevents the soil from becoming too compacted and allows for water, nutrients, and oxygen to penetrate your grass’s roots. Aerating a lawn also helps break up thatch accumulation.
